The Nishna Trail is a proposed recreational trail along the West Fork of the West Nishnabotna River between Harlan and Manning, Iowa. The trail would create a new place for walking, bicycling, running, and outdoor recreation while connecting communities in Shelby and Carroll counties.
Supporters are working to develop a trail corridor following the West Fork of the West Nishnabotna River from Harlan north toward Manning. The project would allow residents and visitors to experience western Iowa’s river valley, natural scenery, communities, and rural landscape.
The Nishna Trail is envisioned as a safe and welcoming route for people of different ages and abilities. It could also support outdoor recreation, community health, tourism, and economic development throughout the region.
The Nishna Trail is one part of a broader effort to connect communities across western Iowa.
A team in Manning is working toward additional trail connections involving Manning, Templeton, Coon Rapids, and Carroll. Together, these projects could ultimately connect Harlan with the Sauk Rail Trail and the Great American Rail-Trail.
This larger trail network would give local residents more places to walk and ride while welcoming bicyclists and other trail users traveling through Iowa.
The developing trail network is expected to serve and connect communities including:
Harlan
Manning
Templeton
Coon Rapids
Carroll
Exact routes, trailheads, construction schedules, and connections will depend on planning, land agreements, community partnerships, and available funding.
The Nishna Trail is currently being planned and developed. Supporters are working with local communities, property owners, public agencies, organizations, donors, and volunteers to move the project forward.
Updates about the proposed route, fundraising, partnerships, and project milestones will be shared on this website as information becomes available.
